Later that day, Arlo was assigned to the stables. The scent of hay and horse sweat was familiar, comforting even, though the work was hard and hands always rough. He liked the steadiness of the horses, the rhythm of feeding, cleaning, and brushing. The horses didn’t judge. They didn’t care who he was.
That evening, he wasn’t alone. Julien, one of the groom’s sons, had sneaked in with him. It had started as teasing, as all things did with someone his age. But soon, Arlo’s pulse had raced for reasons he didn’t yet understand.
