Corinne walked past her and left with Annie. Annie turned around, glanced at Sherlyn, and asked Corinne, "Who's she?" Corinne answered curtly, "A relative." Sherlyn gritted her teeth angrily, took out her cell phone, and snapped a photo of Corinne walking with the pink-haired Annie. "Fine. If I can't get it out of you, Dad can! Carmen said with a smile. She curtsied, and Lux kissed her. She saw Lexi waving at her, so she waved back. Her siblings were now a real part of Lux's family. He even had the twins brought over so they could attend Katy and Caleb's child's birthday. Lexi was only two years older than Katy, so the two ladies got along well.

The buildings looked like crystal, impossibly tall and delicate, and the towers shimmered as though spun from the night sky itself. The light wasn’t from the sun—not the kind I knew. This place lived in twilight, where day and night held hands, casting the city in a perpetual, silvery glow. Light veins carved into mountaintops, glowing against the midnight sky. There was beauty here, haunting and fragile.

Relief flooded her, but almost immediately, the fiery heat in her body surged, overwhelming her. She slid down against the wall, her strength giving out, and pulled off her T-shirt in an attempt to cool down. Her breathing was heavy, and her pounding heartbeat echoed in her ears. Her entire body felt as though it were being devoured by ants, the sensation unbearable. She couldn’t stop the soft, stifled moans that escaped her lips. Suddenly, a sharp click pierced the air, and the lights flicked on. Tara’s vision blurred, her consciousness slipping away. Through her hazy gaze, she saw a tall, striking man walking toward her.

The blade gleamed, sharpened to a fine edge. "You really think I'd fall for the same trap twice?" Before he could react, I slashed the blade across my own arm. Blood welled up instantly, and I smeared it over my clothes and skin. Right on cue, the door burst open. "Mr. Morland, please don't hurt Carmen! She's just... lonely, that's why she's meeting a man in a place like this—" Hazel's plea died in her throat as she saw me, standing there, and covered in blood.
