If Isabel didn’t hang up soon, she was going to have to do so herself.

I think he did something really bad and we weren’t together anymore, that was my gut feeling I just couldn’t remember what. Maybe I could get more answers from my father. "I see a splendid partnership between us, Carter" Cassie's father raised his cup to mine, making the tinkle coming from the toast echo through the place. "Tell me John, how's your first high profile case going?" he inquired. "Are you already feeling the popular pressure from your client being accused of murdering an important figure?"

he says. "Sorry," I say again, and he smiles. "How's school?" he asks. "It's going fine, everything is pretty easy," I tell him. "You're smart, like your dad," he says with a smile, and I smile too. He rarely talks about my dad, but once in a while he provides short, heartfelt statements like that, and I love it. I also think one of the reasons I have a closer relationship with him than my grandmother is because Geneviève Sinclair never talks about my father, her son. I guess it's a hurtful reminder for her, losing a son, but I also lost him too, and I didn't know him for long, so sometimes I long for conversations about him.

Cassie stepped between Aser and Kael so fast that even Kael blinked in surprise. "I’ve been bitten, Kael," Cassie said coldly. "By my father, by my wimp of an ex-husband, and by the boy the Syndicate sent to cause me trouble, and I'm still standing. I know you've seen the numbers I make. That’s profit. That man lost money, and I make money. If the Council cares about strength, they should look at the balance sheet. If they care about bloodlines, well, that’s just a nice way of saying you’re afraid of change."
