The Burning
"The building we were in—it caught fire. I don’t even know how it started. Maybe it was an accident, or maybe it was some of the raiders. It doesn’t matter. All I know is that one minute we were together, and the next...."
I trailed off, my hands trembling in my lap. My mind was back in that burning building, the smoke so thick I couldn’t see, couldn’t breathe. I could still hear Chloe’s voice, calling out to me, begging me to save her. But I hadn’t been fast enough. I hadn’t been strong enough.
"I tried to get to her," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I really tried. But the fire—it was too much. I couldn’t... I couldn’t reach her."
