Callie was his songbird. Vin winced at the thought. The nickname came from Callie’s situation of being trapped here like a caged bird, with Vin being her captor. But now, it was as if Vin was the one captured by Callie’s charms. She was still his caged little bird, he never wanted to let her go. “You never did tell me about your tattoos,” whispered Vin as his fingers trailed softly along the intricate lines of colorful ink across her whole back. Flowers and petals adorned her back, while at the center of it all was a little bird.

His head was high but his eyes were downwards. I gulped down the lump form in my throat as realization dawned upon me that I had once again came back to his cage from where I had taken my fly of freedom. “Please come out” he requested me but his strong voice was saying something else. He was not requesting me but telling me that I had to follow him and my frightened body took it like a command.

She reeked of fear like others might wear perfume, that sharp acrid scent that came from someone who lived in constant anticipation of pain. She smelled of helplessness, of resignation, of a spirit that had been broken so thoroughly it no longer remembered what wholeness felt like. She was like a caged bird that had been born in captivity—wings clipped before it ever knew the sky existed, voice silenced by handlers who preferred quiet compliance to natural song. She had no scent worth claiming, no presence that should command attention from someone of my status.

I drank the coffee, its bitter warmth spreading across my tongue. "Fractures are the price of breaking free from the cage, and the cracks let the light in."
