A chuckle that washed dread and fear over everyone in the room. Alston wasn’t feared just because he was the strongest Alpha to exist or because he was ruthless and cruel. It was more because he was irritable and unpredictable, he could anything as long as he wanted to, right or wrong, no one could stop him. When someone as strong as Alston was wilful and unpredictable; automatically fear wold be instilled in everyone.

Carried on a current of cold air from the car’s a/c, I tasted Hakeem’s fears as though they were my own. Losing his younger siblings, being forced to live in a world where they no longer existed—that was his greatest fear. Sensing the fears of others was more of a prelude to my actual abilities, and more often than not I was met with an abundance of superficial night terrors rather than anything substantial. Spiders, snakes, darkness, clowns. Goddess, why were so many people terrified of clowns? It was rare that I met someone with a fear that delved far beyond the surface, someone with a fear like Hakeem’s.

I give a half-smile. - But I've always preferred fear. Fear is a natural reflex in people, a primitive instinct that governs their actions. It infiltrates the mind, sculpting thoughts, defining choices and limiting daring. It is fear that sustains order, teaches caution and commands respect. It not only marks the past with scars of mistakes avoided or faced, but also casts shadows over the future, guiding every step with uncertainty and fear. In the end, everyone is a prisoner of fear, even those who pretend to ignore it.

Kaia felt a sudden wave of fear as she realized staying alone, especially with the danger of Alex, was a risky choice. Panic filled her as she thought about how vulnerable she was. He didn't had to fear about anything. The world was at his feet. He got whatever he wanted without even lifting his finger. Instead he was the reason for others fear. He was the reason that people used to hide in their homes. People were terrified of him, they used to cry whenever they saw him. This was the power he hold over others.

I couldn’t remember why he did that but the fear, that was something I would never forget. What I was feeling now was a million times more than whatever I felt then. I’ve come to realize Carlson wasn’t really a predator, at least not one like Xander. He just wanted to instill terror in me because it gave him a weird boost of serotonin. Xander on the other hand didn’t want to just scare me, he wanted me to like it, to crave the fear he brought within me and that was on all basis fucked up. But I guessed that was Xander for me, the things they said about him held a lot of truth to them.

We've never even had a proper conversation, yet he can tell a secret I always try to hide from people's eyes so easily. "What's that?" I ask unconsciously. He slows and waits till I fall in line with his steps. His gaze is on me as he says, "You fear the dark, Mare. Someone whom many wolves and Alphas feel threatened by, yet it's the dark that tops your list of fears." He chuckles to himself because even I can see that it is ridiculous. I justify it with a pout. "Everyone's scared of the dark. It just depends who's brave enough to stand it."
