Katherina teased as he released her and sat on the countertop facing her. Harrison looked Katherina in the eye, his gaze steady and reassuring. "Can I ask you a question?" he said, his voice calm and gentle. Katherina nodded, her breath catching in her throat. "Of course," she said, her voice trembling slightly. Harrison hesitated for a moment, gathering his thoughts. "When are you going to tell me about it? The guy...the guy who badged in on us few nights ago."

I finally said vaguely. “I see.” Harrison nodded. “That’s why I prefer to live alone. Ginger snap?” He held out a plate of ginger snap cookies that I hadn’t even seen him prepare. I took one and munched on it, watching while he stood and disappeared into the hallway. “I take it you came about the Luna’s Bane,” he called. “Yeah.” I heard some shuffling of books. Harrison cursed a few times. Then, he returned with a stack of journals in his hands. He plopped them down in front of me, sending a plume of dust flying up into my face.

But he just laughed louder, running straight toward the waiting car—toward a night I wasn’t sure I was ready for, but one I could no longer avoid. Outside, the first thing I noticed was the car. It wasn’t a taxi. It wasn’t even close. The sleek black vehicle sat calmly by the curb, polished and imposing, the kind of car that didn’t just arrive anywhere—it announced itself. My heart skipped uncomfortably. I already knew before I fully processed it. This was a Harrison car. Before I could retreat or even think of another excuse, the door opened from the inside. And then I saw him. Kai Harrison.

I crouched down and watched the interaction from the garage, peeking my head out just enough to see. Killian strolled out casually, hands in his pockets, the breeze ruffling his dark hair. He lifted his hand and whistled sharply through his fingers before waving at Harrison, who seemed to bound down towards them like an overeager puppy. Once they were off the stairs, Harrison straightened himself, trying to match his height to Killian’s as he got nearer. Killian made no move to close the distance. Harrison held his hand out; Killian didn’t take it. Harrison quickly recovered and threw his arm over Sasha who seemed to be posing for Killian – who, again, took no notice.

Hazel smiled and said, "Hello, Mr. Harrison. I am Hazel from HAB. I would like to talk to you, is that okay?" She and Martha had waited for Harrison for an entire afternoon, but eventually, when Martha went out to buy water, she saw Harrison leaving through the back door. So they followed him in desperation, as time waits for no one. Harrison squinted his eyes, feeling a bit annoyed. He had been hiding all day, and finally came out, only to be chased down by Hazel. Harrison turned to look at Hazel, and his gaze, which was blatantly sizing her up, became increasingly deep.

She could feel its shape from where she was — the nest of serpents where Harrison remade himself after she'd burned him to ashes. Remade? No. Twisted. For when Harrison came back, it was not the dreamer she had killed. He came out of the dark another — crueller, darker, sharper one. Not a designer anymore, but a Mafia prince, whose name was not mentioned in awe, but in fear. And he had lived. Not lived. Flourished. The truth rotted in her brain like decay. And on top of all that, there was the news that made her laugh so hard she had aides waiting in the hall outside her door scurrying:

“You’re right on time.” I chuckled, starting the car. “For once, yes. Harris wouldn’t let me go unless I answered every damn question he had.” Her head turned sharply. “So? How did it go?” I exhaled, glancing at her before merging into traffic. “I told him everything, Kim. The car that’s been tailing me, the SUV that exploded, the flash drive with all those files about killing me, and the little stunt from earlier today when that car rammed into us and bolted. I laid it all out.”
