Impulse was a luxury I had stopped allowing myself a long time ago. But that had not felt like a choice. That had felt like something else and I was not entirely sure I had a word for it yet. I thought about Charlotte at breakfast with her damp hair and her book. I thought about her sitting across from me in the library asking me whose idea the heir clause was with the kind of directness that most people in my life had learned not to use with me. I thought about the way she had looked at the mansion when we first arrived, taking it all in without saying anything, storing it all somewhere behind those green eyes.

I swallow the witch's brew and wait for him to continue. He downs half a cup in two swallows. "Charlotte is hard-working, concentrates on her education, uses all the gifts nature has given her to the best of her ability. She is.... terrifyingly courageous.... and as for money...." He swings his head and polishes off the cup, then stoops to refill. ".... it's of no interest to her at all, beyond the basic means to live. Getting her to spend on clothes or jewellery or the other trinkets most women want is pointless. Give her a library and a quiet spot and she's in heaven."

Charlotte asked angrily. "That picture was a long time ago. I went to Tyler's house to give my savings. I'm stuck between right and wrong. I let him run away because I love him. But since I've been with Lucifer, I've fallen for him. " Ely's promise. Charlotte is confused as to whom she will trust. Whether to Venido or to Ely. "Ellen Dimagiba?" Charlotte said. Ely grinned and shook his head. "You're investigating me right? Do you want the truth?" Charlotte asked this question and waved. "Spill the milk." Charlotte said. "Amira and I are sisters by blood." Its promise.

Emily Emily was sitting by the little stream in the woods. She had been a run and shifted back to sit and watch the water a while. Evidently she was tired because she’d taken a nap. When she woke up.. she wasn’t alone. She turned and looked at the person sitting next to her. Charlotte. Charlotte grinned at her and Emily immediately started crying. But why was she crying? Wait a minute. Charlotte couldn’t be here. Charlotte had died. But there she was… sitting right beside her.

"Charlotte, what happened? I heard you fell down the stairs?" Emily's voice carried a saccharine concern as she sat heavily on Charlotte's injured leg. Charlotte clenched her teeth, suppressing a cry of pain. "Now that I'm divorced," Emily said, a smug smile curling her lips, "do you really think Eric would still look at you? Using my face to cozy up to him—don't you feel disgusted with yourself?" She tilted her head, her smile as radiant as sunshine piercing through a frozen landscape.

"Charlotte. Age: twenty-two. Five feet eight. 135 pounds. 38, 22, 36. Interests.... not listed. Background.... not listed. Virgin. Virgin? This girl? How can a girl who looks like this, conceivably be a virgin at twenty-two? Men must lie at her feet. It's just got to be a con.... .... .... .... but what if it isn't…? Taking a coffee break, I open the message again, clicking through to see if I can learn anything I missed the first time, but no, there's nothing more.

Where the hell are you, Emily? Emily's mouth went dry. Her lips quivered to speak but no words came out of them. Emily smiled as a certain memory of little Dalton chasing after Charlotte popped into her mind. Charlotte was a hard kid and did not like to mingle with others. She had only one female friend until Dalton came along. She had hid behind her grandfather and refused to shake his hand when they were introduced. Charlotte's grandfather, Elijah, had flushed with embarrassment before apologizing on her behalf and telling Dalton and his grandfather that Charlotte was a shy little girl.

Her head throbbed a bit from all the noise. She squinted her eyes to see clearly. Right in the middle of the chaos, with arms folded proudly like she just won a huge lottery was Charlotte, Carl's sister. "Oh, you're leaving?" Charlotte began kindly with a poisonous dryness at the end of her speech. "Go away, Charlie!" Emily said failing to shield her face properly from the lenses her hands were barely enough. "You've helped your biggest fan with her dream man and the money. Can I just go now?"

I stand up from my chair and walk downstairs, only to see Charlotte Hilton standing in the center of the living room, with a box in her hand. “Oh goodness, Emma. Hello.” She smiles so wide, revealing her perfectly white teeth. Her father is Mr. Hilton, the man who won’t invest in my games until I am settled down.
