Charlotte's eyes open again, finding me across the room.
Charlotte stares at her mother for a long moment, then looks at me again.
The silence stretches.
Finally, she nods. Just once. Barely perceptible.
Greta stands, leaning down to kiss Charlotte's forehead again.
"I'm going to get some coffee and call your aunt.
Greta leaves, the door clicking softly shut behind her.
And then it's just me and Charlotte.
I move closer, slowly, like I'm approaching a wounded animal. Pull a chair up beside her bed but don't sit yet.
