Like the baby growing in my tummy.” Charlie was so quiet that it caught Charlotte’s attention.

She thought about how Valentina wished for their mother to die. Charlotte wasn't a saint. She was spoiled and she was selfish. But she loved her brother. And for the first time, she saw that Valentina was destroying him. "I have to know the truth," Charlotte said. She tucked the drawing and the sock into her pocket. "I have to know if they are really gone." Charlotte walked into the kitchen. Sarah and Mary were busy preparing the afternoon tea. He was surprised at the sudden urge to kiss her gleaming soft bare skin, but he shoved that thought aside as he deftly unhooked her bra.

She waited quietly for me to say the next thing. "Six years ago, when I was with Alessandre…I was pregnant." Charlotte sucked in her breath. "Oh, honey." That's a fucking tragedy, and all of it is not on you." She squeezed me so tightly my ribs hurt. "You’re not anyone's debt. You are the whole damn equation."

They didn’t care about who she was before she became Xavier’s wife. They didn’t care about all the abuse she had suffered in Jonah’s hands, but now her life was suddenly interesting enough for them to make a news headline with her name. What a bunch of hypocrites. To make matters worse, none of the things they had penned down were true. Charlotte wasn’t a saint. There were things she had done that weren’t entirely innocent in the past. They could have mentioned those things but instead, they had to cook up lies from scratch just to make their stories sell.

Everything to make a man go crazy was intact and sumptuous. I wondered why my love life was messy.
