She asks as she rubs her temples and paces in front of me I've never seen her this stressed before. "What do they need help with?" I ask "Their flips, landings, posture" she says as she taps her fingers to list out the problems "Can I see them rehearse it and make corrections from there?" I ask since I can't agree nor disagree with her since I haven't seen the routine yet "Whatever" she says as she leads me back towards the group of tense cheerleaders "You guys need to relax. Tensing causes hesitation and you can't hesitate during this routine or it'll look unprofessional" I say as I stop in front of the girls

What is the worst that could happen? Every cheerleader here seemed to radiate confidence laughter, chatter, tossing their hair without a care, bouncing on the balls of their feet. And then there was me, Sophie Hart, trying desperately not to betray the chaos of my life at home behind a carefully practiced smile. “Hey! You must be Sophie!” a cheerful voice called. I turned and saw a girl with braided pigtails and an oversized bow that probably had its own zip code. “I’m Lila. Don’t worry, we’re all super nice. You’re gonna love it here.”

There were only a small number of them entering this secret campus and maybe two looked like football players. A girl nudged her elbow and sat down next to her. “Hey there, my name’s Vanessa, I’m co-leader of the cheerleaders of the Lions, you look like what we’re looking for?” Quinn pursed her lips together looking over the bleached blond in her short flared skirt and tight blouse with a judging glare. “Ah…no offense but…” “You look like the type…” Vanessa rudely interrupted Quinn’s rejection. “Are you a dancer or something?”

"I won't calm them because this is so wrong. I deserve some respect, and an apology." Candice snorted. "You called me a coward, and you expect an apology from me? How cute," she closed the distance between her and Amber. "Need I remind you that I am the Captain of the cheerleaders, and I will not have you come here and call our age long tradition stupid."

For no apparent reason, I caught myself smiling. I stood by the corner of the gym and watch the cheerleading team as they practice, my eyes meet with that of their leader, I stared at the girl. Her dirty blonde hair was tied in a messy bun, and curls hanging down her tight cheekbones. The lesbian girl gave me a smiley cheer wave before getting back her attention at what she’s doing.

"I don't accept explanations. From now on, you're my girlfriend. Unless you're planning to dump me." She looked up fast. "I would never—" She caught the tease in my eyes and smacked my chest lightly. "You're awful. I'm not talking to you anymore." She dropped her head, quiet again. The kids around us started cheering, yelling for us to kiss. Some of the older folks watched with soft smiles. I leaned down and kissed Dora gently. She hesitated—then kissed me back. Yeah. Maybe staying here wasn't so bad after all.

It accelerated into a river that was almost completely frozen. After I got up, I spotted Rosalia, who was running toward me from a distance and crying. “That was a wonderful jump. Looks like it’s not your first rodeo.” Noah smiled and draped a thick cashmere coat over my shoulders. “Donna! I missed you so much!" Rosalia threw herself at me and embraced me tightly, “You've lost more weight!” “Grace.” Noah held up a black umbrella to shield us from the snow, “No, not Grace. Grace Whitmore is dead from now on. Have you thought about a new name?”

I shouldn’t. “That was so cool, Eric!” the cheerleader said, oblivious to my turmoil. “I didn’t know you knew how to flip like that.” I managed a stiff smile and brushed my wet hair out of my face. “I learned how to do it during training,” I said nonchalantly. “I can do plenty of other tricks, too.” The cheerleader’s face turned a delicate shade of pink at my words. “Wow, that’s so cool,” she echoed. “You should show me how flexible you are later.”
