To her, I was still her perfect, quiet daughter who was about to marry the perfect golden boy.
Suddenly, the front door handle turned, and Joe walked into the room. He was wearing a crisp white dress shirt, carrying a large bouquet of fresh pink peonies in his arms. Peonies were my favorite flowers. Or rather, they used to be my favorite flowers before I realized he only bought them in bulk whenever his conscience felt guilty.
"Hey, beautiful," Joe murmured, stepping over to the sofa and leaning down to kiss my cheek.
His lips felt cold, like blocks of ice against my skin. A sharp wave of revulsion washed over me, but I forced my facial expression to stay completely neutral.
