I didn’t mean—” “I know,” I said, eyes locked on his. “But Brenna sounds like you forgot who I am. Phoenix is who I became.” He smiled, slow and wicked. “I like your territorial side.” I rolled my eyes, but my lips tugged into a grin. “It’s not territorial. It’s truth.”

Marcus Phoenix's first attempt at creating a phoenix-wolf hybrid through torture instead of birth. "Cyrus," Marcus Phoenix breathed, and for the first time since I'd met him, he looked truly broken. The Shadow Walkers were using him like a living key, his corrupted phoenix fire eating through the sanctuary's wards from the inside out. As fucking cheesy as it was, Uriel had mentioned having birds fly overhead with our searing kiss, but with the help of my brother, we did something better. Phoenix birds of Hell rose to the sky, their flaming tails of fire exploding overhead, scorching the sky. Feathers dropped from their wings and tails, only to ignite and flame out just before hitting the crowd. The ash, now white as snow, dusting us all.

I had barely tossed my designer duffel into the passenger seat of my sleek black Porsche 911 Turbo S before I was tearing out of the airport driveway, engine roaring like a beast that couldn’t be tamed. I shake my head no. “The phoenix is a mysterious bird. It’s special. Like you. It has a strong love for its people. It gives the people its power. She rises above them. She brings death to life. You do that, Mia. You will bring life to us. Our Phoenix queen will protect us with your love and healing. You will allow us to once again, rise from the ashes and be reborn. Would you like that?” He studies my face. I nod yes and give him a quick glance.

That must be the shapeshifters pack symbol, the phoenix bird. He turned his back to the camera, then returned with a rolled paper. “Also a phoenix bird came earlier with this message, I thought it was from Sienna since she was the only one who uses them, but I guess I was wrong.” I felt my heart drop in my stomach. The supremes were the only people I knew who used phoenix birds beside Sienna.

But then I heard myself answering her question. "Phoenix is a mythological creature. It emerged as a new and stronger bird from something that has been destroyed. That was me. A long time ago. I died and rose from my own ashes." I stood up and got a slice of pizza. "Wow." I heard Mamba say. "I'll just take a bath." I said and left them. I could still hear the jolly voice of Mamba, asking the same question to Sphinx. I shook my head. She doesn't seem to be tired from our boxing session.

By sunset, only Adrian’s people remained. Adrian led her inside, his sharp gaze was all over her. The grand entrance boasted a massive chandelier, dripping with crystal, reflecting light across marble floors polished to perfection. A staircase curled up to the second floor, its golden railings gleaming under the dim lights. Art pieces hung on the walls. There was no doubt this was the home of someone who controlled everything within its walls. "Listen carefully, Seraphina," Adrian finally spoke, turning to face her. "There are rules you will follow if you intend to stay here. Break them, and we will have problems."

“You’ve never seen one, my lady?” “No, they are beautiful,” my attention was drawn to one who filtered to the ground, chirping sadly. It looked like a baby. “Poor thing,” I murmured. “Can I touch them?” “They are well trained so they won’t cause any harm," Teal explained. I crouched down. “He’s too young to fly, isn’t he?” Teal’s eyes flicked toward the little orange bird. “Perhaps. But they all learn eventually.” I took a careful step closer to the little Phoenix. He looked up at me with bright, gold-ringed eyes.

"It's a stubborn one.' I took a step, my boots crunched over brittles and dead leaves. I walked further and continued, even while my eyes seemed to linger on the ruins. I wasn't sure were to look but I had chosen to move from here because I thought Phoenix must be attracted somehow to fire, they could burn themselves and be rebirth through their ashes then they wouldn't be scared of fire, would they? If my thoughts were right then they must nest around volcanoes or fire lavaes. But... but legends also said they nested in rarer sanctuaries. Phoenix's we're proud birds and of course would want somewhere rare and befitting of their pride.
