I blinked, gasping as I realized I’d stopped concentrating, and two of them were in front of me, trying to kill each other. But something strange was happening. He jumped for her, rushing forward and for a moment they both raised on hind-legs, mouths open and teeth snapping, bodies twisting. His silver-gray fur with the shadowy sections around his neck and face, contrasting with her darker, steel gray that turned red in spots. Faster than I could see, somehow he dropped, twisting his body, switching from attempts to bear her down to the ground, to opening his teeth for her leg.

“Did you finish your history outline?” Caelan’s eyes cut toward mine—sharp, tired, too old for his face. “Half. Then Haku attacked me with a dinosaur.” Haku lifts his chin proudly. “It was a T-Rex.” “It was a plastic lizard,” Caelan mutters. “It was a T-Rex,” Haku repeats, like that settles it.
