Hunting. Suddenly someone else screamed in the fire light across the grounds to the left. The dancers parted and there just off the edge of the light. Something large stood in the shadows, something too tall, but also hunched over. It could have been a man. A horribly misshapen man. Something breathing, but also chittering. Piercing sounds somewhere between a bird and a dying hyena peeled into the air. Arms too long and skinny...ending in...Talons. And its face was long....too long. It had a snout or a muzzle like a horse, but this snout was filled with fangs and canines as long as needles and as thick as thumbs. A shadow hissed, barely light by the fires light, on the edges of the night.

A deafening, booming explosion rattled the mountain peaks, and out of the dark forest surrounding the sanctuary, a third, massive army of wolves emerged—but they weren't wearing the colors of Nightshade or Blood-Moon. They wore the obsidian armor of the Shadow-Claw pack, led by an Alpha who had supposedly signed a treaty with Damon hours ago. And their weapons weren't pointed at the mercenaries; they were aimed directly at Elena.

The plateau’s hum gnawed, resolve hardening, her fire his anchor. Shade, his wolf, snarled, gravelly, his black-and-red form prowling, eyes narrowed. She’s fire, pup. Shrine’s death—guard her, kill!

"When you left, I had to make adjustments, settle so to say." "Excuse me?" Twyla snaps. "Settle? You’re not referring to settling…for me, are you?" Wait? What? Cato and Twyla? “Because this means nothing if you didn’t mean it,” she steps out from behind me to stand in clear view of me and Levi. Her face is blank as she lifts up the hem of her shirt to reveal a bite mark along her side. The top set of teeth on her stomach while the bottom set of canines wrap around the flank of her body to mark her back. The wound is still bloody and an angry red. Is it infected?

Before Scar could react, she was already beneath him, her claws raking across his underbelly. Scar howled in pain. Blood sprayed into the air, dark and thick. But Tesla wasn’t done. She twisted mid-motion, her powerful hind legs launching her upward. She sank her fangs deep into his throat. Scar choked, his massive form thrashing violently. Kael and Henry watched in stunned silence as Tesla’s jaws tightened, her grip unrelenting. Scar’s roars turned into strangled gasps. He clawed at her desperately, trying to shake her off. But she wouldn’t let go.

That’s why they’re following you now.” Before Luna could answer, a horn blew from the watchtower. One short blast. Border alert. Both of them were on their feet instantly, years of instinct taking over. “River Claw?” Kael asked, already reaching for his weapon. Luna grabbed her cloak. “Let’s find out.” --- They met Mara and the patrol at the eastern ridge. Ten River Claw wolves stood on the other side of the line, led by the same scarred emissary. No weapons drawn, but the air was thick with tension. The kind that made fur stand up on its own.

But there were too many—a tide of darkness pressing in. Selene cried out, a Draugr pinning her to the ground, its claws digging into her shoulder. Luna turned, power surging, but before she could strike, a shadow moved faster. Toran. His blade sliced clean through the creature's neck, its body crumpling to dust. He reached down, pulling Selene to her feet, his voice rough. "Stay close." Selene's breath was ragged. "I had it." Toran grinned, blood splattered across his face. "Consider it a favor you owe me."

“TALEN will rip you a new asshole as soon as he finds out about this.” Even if TALEN wanted her as a second wife, he still wanted her, and he wouldn’t let anyone hurt her. He raked them across her stomach. She felt flesh scrape away in deep gouges. Just before passing out, she heard a growl from the direction of the house. Great, the wife had joined the party.
