I swallowed the blood rising in my throat and kept running. The cliff edge loomed ahead. Three massive boulders jutted up at the precipice, forming a natural triangular choke point. I charged straight for the edge. At the last possible second before my foot hit open air, I stomped hard on the outermost rock and used the momentum to execute a desperate reversal leap. The beast's massive body couldn't stop. Inertia carried it forward, and with an anguished howl, it plunged over the cliff's edge into the abyss.

She turned back to the castle, looked around the cliff — she had no one to wait for help from. The cliff was skirted by a path washed by waves and led to a stone bowl with a hot spring. The Black Cliff was located next to the underwater volcano, but it was so deep under water that its warmth reached only the bowl, heating water inside it. The sea itself remained cold, resentfully hitting a rocky prominence fencing off the bowl. There was a narrow strip of land stretching along the cliff and leading to the spring. At high tide, the strip was flooded, blocking the way to the hot "bath".

So, I’m going to jump first, then you’re next.” She peeked through the window and I saw how her breathing hitched. “Tha…that’s high.” “I know that’s why I’ll go first, then I’ll catch you. No need to be scared.” Upon seeing her nod, a sense of relief filled me. “Give me the bag,” I said, positioning myself to jump.
