Calix asked after a long moment of silence, pulling out a book from the small stack on my desk. “That is a book of tales and myths about our people.” I said, smiling when he placed the book next to me on the loveseat. “It holds the story of the original Shifters and the Four Sacred Dragons that founded the four Kingdoms.” Calix climbed onto the seat and grabbed the book, raising it to me as he settled against the armrest. “Would you like me to read it to you?” I smiled as he nodded again, his brown hair bouncing around as he leaned in a little closer.

Right after he had compared me to Nergal, like every other day. I could still hear the pride in his voice when he looked at Nergal. I grimaced at the memory. Out of anger at being yelled at, I had returned to the secret underground room where he always snuck in—without knowing I was following—and stole the book that lay open on the black forest-green, old tree stump pedestal.

I lit it, and the flickering flame cast eerie shadows on the walls. As the light grew brighter, I saw that the restricted section was filled with books, but each one had a small keyhole on its cover. I realized that these books were locked, and I wondered what kind of secrets they might hold. My eyes scanned the shelves, and that's when I saw it - a black book with a symbol on its cover that made my heart skip a beat. It was the same symbol that was on the jade necklace I had found. I felt a surge of excitement and reached for the book, my fingers trembling slightly.
