Calla Blake stared at the spreading puddle of ruined chemicals, his face twisted with horror. For several seconds, he stood frozen, watching months of research dissolve into toxic steam. Then he smiled. The expression sent ice through my veins. This wasn't the desperate panic I expected from someone who'd just lost everything. This was the look of a man who still had cards to play. Blake reached behind him and pulled out two vials from a hidden compartment. One glowed with the same blue-green light as the destroyed compounds. The other was filled with dark red liquid that I recognized with growing dread.

I screamed out in intense pain at the searing sensation, tears streaming down my face, blood down my body.

Jack’s hand tightened on the MCX. “Breach. Now.” Bill dropped a hockey puck of PETN, blew the service door inward with a cough of pressure and a flurry of sparks. Smoke rolled low and lazy across cold tile. They flowed through.

A bloody grin spread across his face—the first real smile I’d seen on him in weeks. "Let them come," Caleb said. He adjusted his grip, his ink-black nails digging into my coat. "I’ve got a lot of noise to let out." The front doors of the cathedral blew inward. Two flashbangs detonated, filling the nave with white smoke and high-pitched ringing. Everybody has gone, even the rest of the guards. A car horn startles me and I quicken my attempts at searching for where the bleach is kept. I walk into the kitchen and I look around frantically. I see a small door and I jog towards it and open it. Bingo! There are shelves of soap, disinfectants, other products, but most importantly, bleach! I grab the small gallon of bleach and I jog back out of the kitchen quickly. As I walk through the living room so I can go upstairs and prepare the syringe, I spot Robert talking to someone at the entrance of the house.

His hand clutched my neck fiercely, I could see black spots at the corners of my eyes as my air circulation was cut off. A part of me wanted to give up and just let him have his way, at least I’d be alive by the end of it. She asks curiously. He pauses for a second, and her eyes widen as he hesitates. "I did, technically," he finally says. "What was it?" She asks eagerly, leaning forward in her seat. She could mix it into the water and flush out any vampires on her land. "What seemed most effective was chlorine and copper mixed together, forming copper chloride. It was very volatile even in a lab, so it would have been impossible to use outside of one," he admits mournfully, "I could have sorted my problem out entirely, and nobody would have been hurt."
