“She was the creator of the vaccine, it has come to our knowledge that they may have needed a backup plan.” Archer gulped heavily at the information, he nodded in acknowledgement signalling that was his only question. “Find me information, I want this closed down immediately.” The Colonel ordered, pointing his finger to the table as he said it. “Yes sir,” the men called out in unison. Their boss left the room abruptly, leaving the men once again to their own thoughts. Silence fell shortly before anyone spoke. It had been months since they had to retrieve a body, dead or alive. The thought worried Archer, he couldn’t live with himself if the last thing she experienced from him before she died

Then— “Clinton sent us.” My heart betrays me immediately. One stupid painful beat against my ribs. I hate it. I hate that his name still affects me after everything. “He traded himself for you,” Cody says quietly. The words hit so strangely that for a second I genuinely don't understand them. “What?” “The Luna was going to execute you tonight.” Cody runs a hand through his messy hair. “Clinton offered himself instead.” “No.” “He confessed in front of the entire pack that he killed his father.”

In the end, he chose to jump to his death. This time, when I arrived at the scene, Liam was slumped beside the command vehicle, his face pale with panic. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up. "I called you dozens of times last night! Why didn't you answer? Your phone is supposed to stay on during operations—that's basic discipline! You knew there was a bomb disposal mission last night, and you're the most experienced in the whole team. And yet you chose that moment to turn off your phone? Andrew, what exactly are you playing at?!"

The next time I met Cody was on the day of the trial. We waited for nearly an hour in court, but Sydney still didn't show up. An underling of Cody came to report. "Boss, Sydney is trying to escape the city." Cody slammed the table and stood up. He took a deep look at me, then strode away. Later, I learned that Cody had personally pursued Sydney and crashed into her car, knocking it into the river. When rescuers pulled her out, she was already a cold corpse. Cody, the most influential figure in the city, was arrested by the police on the spot.

My husband, Jerome Dyson, and I, Winter Montez, drowned in a freak accident out at sea. Although my body was gone, my soul was still around, and I found myself hanging around my son, Casey Dyson. I watched as Casey organized a full funeral procession for Jerome and me, looking every bit exhausted and disheartened, like he was barely holding it together. However, as soon as the funeral procession was over, he threw down the bunch of white lilies impatiently and said, "Oh, my god! Those two old fools are finally dead. They just wouldn't die for years! Luckily, we succeeded this time!"

I rammed into Gamma James with enough strength to shove him away and catch Zane, sitting on the ground with him. I pressed my trembling hands to his wound, trying to stop the blood. It kept coming. “Please help me. Zane needs to stay alive,” I choked out. “It's no use. The blade was poisoned. He's going to die.” Zane wheezed, his face contorted in agony. His blood-soaked hand reached out to touch my cheek, stared at me, his lips moved, and the words poured out softly from his mouth. “I'm sorry.” His hand fell back down, and he took one last gasp, then he went still.

His forehead was covered in blood, which blended with the rain and smeared across his entire face. Eli stood apart from all of it. He didn't even cry as he watched the doors close. He just stood in the rain as he watched the whole cremation process. I floated in the air, taking it all in. I then looked at Eli—his face pale but still full of life—and at the space above his head. It was completely empty now. That damned countdown had vanished. I broke into a smile, thinking that it was truly wonderful. I was glad that Eli was still alive, as it meant that my death hadn't been completely in vain.

"No." The man's smile carried sadness and relief all at once. "You remember." I stared at him. "Commander Rowan?" "Yes." The room seemed to tilt around me. Everyone knew Commander Rowan was dead. The kingdom had mourned him. Stories had been written about his sacrifice. Children learned about the brave commander who died protecting the Moon Queen. "You're dead." A quiet laugh escaped him. "Apparently not." Kael folded his arms. "I'm assuming there's an explanation." "There is."

I don’t know why, but something is rotten in my gut and it’s never wrong. We storm through the building, Roddy’s being the last room at the end of the long ass hallway. The door is locked and Grouch sticks his ear to it, then backs up and kicks it open. The immediate stench of death I know all too well hits my nose and I can’t believe nobody has noticed it. It’s at least fifteen doors from mine. Missile and Grouch storm in, but I can already see the lifeless body of Ryan “Roddy” Grimes on the bed. I step in the room and see a needle sticking right out of his fucking arm. His skin is already discolored, he’s been dead a couple days. And nobody even realized it. Some brotherhood we are.
