I didn't let him talk anymore. "WHAT?" he asked. Almost a scream. I could sense the confusion he had on the other line, but with the noise in the background, I thought maybe he didn't just hear what I said. The noise was not music at all. I reached for my protein shake, trying to keep the twitching out of my hand, and took a drink, thinking if I got up, maybe he would, too. But he didn’t. “There’s just something that doesn’t make any sense to me, and the more I think about it, the more confused I become.” His voice had a tone to it that reminded me of the “bad cop” on one of those police shows, right before the guy launches into his speech about how they all knew the perp was guilty. I gulped down air. “Don’t feel bad about that. There’s a whole lotta stuff that doesn’t make sense to me.” I took another drink, set my cup down, and watched him decide what he wanted to say.

I said before pausing… “and I have no idea how she would know what it looked like or why she would make this for me. But I’ll tell you guys one thing, you really fucked up with this.” I pinched the bridge of my nose again. I took a deep breath, letting my eyes drift closed for a moment as I struggled to articulate the jumbled impressions and emotions swirling inside me. The words seemed to be stuck, refusing to come together into a coherent sentence, and I felt a growing sense of frustration at my inability to express myself.

At least give it a subject to make it more coherent. He had been involved in tax evasion... He had no courage to continue recalling. His mind was in a complete mess. The alternative sentence you suggested is worded a little awkwardly. It should be "His mind was in complete chaos." I feel that "mind" was unnecessarily over-complicated into "state of mind" in this case.

The muffled voices within seemed distorted, a cacophony of sinister whispers and malevolent laughter. Straining to catch every word, Ethan's senses heightened, attuned to the disturbing symphony unfolding on the other side.
