“Wherever I go, I always run into you, Mr. Alex.” She stood up, stepping out from under the umbrella. “And this is none of your business.” Emma walked away. But a black car stopped right in front of her. The rear door opened automatically. “Get in,” Alex ordered curtly, without pleasantries. “No.” Emma turned away, intending to leave. She was sick of being controlled. Sick of being ordered around. Sick of being dragged into someone else’s life when her own life was already in ruins. After only a few steps, suddenly her body lifted off the ground.

She never initiated but she never pulled away quickly either. “You analyze intimacy like it’s a battlefield,” she said one evening. “Isn’t it?” “No.” She stood, moving around her desk slowly. “It’s about control.” “Exactly.” Her heels clicked softly against the floor as she stopped beside me. “You think control is power,” she said. “It is.” Her hand rested on the back of my chair. “Control,” she murmured, “is restraint.” Her proximity made it hard to focus. “And what happens,” I asked quietly, “when restraint fails?”
