Names stick with me long after I've finished a book, and I'm not just talking about the obvious epic ones. A weirdly mundane name in a high-stakes fantasy setting can be just as powerful. It creates friction. Like, a chosen one named 'Dave' immediately makes me wonder about the author's intent—is this a deconstruction, a joke, or a subtle hint about the character's normal origins? That tiny dissonance makes me lean in, looking for clues I might otherwise miss. It builds a layer of interpretation before the character even does anything.

On the flip side, a name that's too on-the-nose can backfire. A villain called 'Lord Malevolent' feels lazy, like the writer didn't trust me to figure out he's the bad guy. But a name with a good phonetic weight, something that feels good to say in your head during their dialogue, adds a rhythm to the reading experience. 'Silas' has a different weight than 'Kael'. One feels weathered and solitary, the other sharp and alien. It's an invisible guide for the voice in your reader's mind.

Naming characters is one of my favorite parts of writing! For a fantasy novel, I'd go for something melodic but with weight, like 'Elysara Veyth' or 'Kaelthor the Sundered.' Those names feel ancient yet fresh, like they belong to a world of magic and forgotten lore. For sci-fi, sharp, futuristic names work—maybe 'Zyr-9' or 'Nexis Vail,' which sound like they could pilot a starship or outsmart an AI overlord.

Contemporary stories need names with personality quirks—'Dashiell Finch' for a witty detective, or 'Luna Reeves' for a free-spirited artist. I love digging into etymology or mashing up syllables until something clicks. Once, I combined 'serene' and 'aster' to get 'Seraster,' which became a queen in one of my drafts. The key is balancing uniqueness with readability—no one wants to stumble over a name every page!

Man, naming a D&D character is half the fun of creation! I love scouring mythology for hidden gems—like 'Branwen' from Welsh legends or 'Taranis' from Celtic lore. Those ancient cultures pack so much meaning into names. Video games are another goldmine; 'Aloy' from 'Horizon Zero Dawn' has such a strong ring to it, or even 'Geralt' for a grittier vibe.

For something totally unique, I sometimes mash up nature words with fantasy suffixes—'Sylvaris' (from 'sylvan') or 'Emberlyn' just sound magical. My current rogue’s name, 'Vex’ahlia,' was actually inspired by a 'Critical Role' NPC. Pro tip: Say the name out loud to test its 'roll-off-the-tongue' factor before committing!
