The sound came from the far corner — the one near the hallway that led to my bedroom. My heart slammed against my ribs. “Hello?” I called, voice a little too sharp. “If that’s you, Xves — not funny.” Nothing. I blinked into the dark, trying to adjust. The faint glow from the city outside gave the room soft outlines — furniture shadows, the silver edge of the glass table, the gleam of the chandelier hanging motionless above.

I had been practicing it while I ate cold food alone in the dark kitchen. “You called me the 'Silent Moore' in your papers. You wrote that I was reserved and unimpressive. Darius' POV The corridor outside Kiara’s room was dim and too quiet. It was silly, but a part of me told me that was a sign that I shouldn't be anywhere near here. But the other side of me, the more stubborn part, told me the silence was something I had to endure if I really wanted to do it. The silence that hovered around wasn't helping. It was the kind of silence that pressed against your chest, lilee its main aim had been to wipe me out of the face of this earth entirely.

Sam shouted but I knew Grace wouldn't hear anything, she was preoccupied at the moment.
