Kate POV I put on the stunning black and gold gown I had picked out for the ceremony tonight. My hair had been done in wavy curls, my makeup a bit more done up than my usual mascara and lip gloss. Lily and my mom were having a field day getting me ready. Now I was admiring the gorgeous gown I had selected. It was a sheer long sleeve black gown with a deep vee neck in the front and back of the gown. It went to the floor with a small train on the back. There was gold trim all around the gown that would sparkle under the lights.

The sound of footsteps made her pause. Grayson entered without knocking. At fifty-one, he was tall and broad, his iron-gray hair cut short and sharp. His hawk-like features made him look exactly like what he was; a man who could bend the world as he pleased. He wore a tailored black coat over a dark shirt, and his presence instantly filled the room. “Mr. Grayson,” Cassandra said, straightening. Her voice stayed cool and professional. “The auction is tomorrow. Viewing hours ended at six.” “I know,” he replied, his voice low and rough.

The carefree-sounding name doesn't fit his stoic persona at all, in my opinion. Mr. Gray sounds more suitable. Then again, when he had spoken to her, he had sounded gentle and kind. Courtney was on full display tonight, her hair in a crown braid and waves, her red dress designer with a plunging neckline, her lipstick a deadly shade to match. Grayson didn’t smile for the cameras. His hair was gelled into place, and his ice blue eyes popped out beautifully. His black and grey pinstripe suit fitting his body like a dream. For that was what the fourth richest man in the city was, an elusive dream. He had an empty champagne flute in front of him, probably not the only one he’d drained that night.

Now she just felt worse knowing his reasoning behind treating her so badly. Grayson had been trying to push her away to make her hate him. He’d been trying to protect her all along.
