Creatures such as dragons and unicorns each were hunted to extinction for the magical healing qualities.

Another monster lurched through the fog—this one leaner, fast, and made of what looked like glass and shadow. “I got the screamer!” I yelled. “I’ll take the creep!” Damian responded, ducking a black tendril as the beast shrieked and swiped for his throat. Norma hurled a potion that exploded in a flash of golden fire. “INCOMING!” It hit the third beast that had tried sneaking in from the left. The potion melted half its skull. “You’re welcome!” she added. The Rift pulsed again. Four more creatures crawled out—one slithering, one winged, two just... teeth.

I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt and I tumbled about as the Jeep rolled into the forest and slammed to a stop against two trees. I heard Kiran scream as he left the protection of the circle, and ran toward me. I kicked the door open and fell out of the jeep, bleeding from my head, and cradling my broken arm. I looked back at her and started running deeper into the forest, jumping into the next realm. “Hylja sála.” I ran toward Kiran, somehow knowing that he’d be in the clearing. They stood across from each other, both of them enveloped in their own flames, hers red, and Kiran’s blue.
