Zara’s POV Flames ripped through the sky like a wound torn open in the heavens. The fire bled downward, splitting the night apart with searing light that washed over the battlefield. Rogues froze mid-attack. Hunters stumbled back, their disciplined formation scattering for the first time. The ground shook beneath us as sparks rained down, setting the treetops ablaze. Marcus shoved me behind him, his chest still bleeding from the hunter’s strike, but his golden eyes locked on the flames as if even he couldn’t decide if this was salvation or damnation.

The others did not know, but as the subordinates of the fiend race, it was clear to the several Fiend Martyrs that what Archfiend Antigonus was using was their ultimate unique skill, Fiend Souls Ablaze. As the name implied, Fiend Souls Ablaze was used to set oneself on fire and unleash endless terrifying power to kill one's opponent. This move would not be easily used unless it was a desperate situation. After all, both sides would suffer great losses.

But hope has been nonexistent since I got married to Ares Brooker. "Nothing," I answer through clenched teeth. "She pushed me."

Serena’s hands lifted instinctively, the flames answering her unspoken command. It started small—a flicker, a spark in the underbrush near the nearest scout. Panic sparked in his eyes as the fire licked toward him, hungry, alive. Another step, and a second burst ignited, precise, deliberate, a warning turned weapon. Serena realized with a cold, sharp thrill: she was no longer prey. She was predator. The moment came suddenly—a scout lunged, and instinct overtook thought. Her hands exploded with controlled fire, a wave that threw him backward, screaming. The others tried to respond, but panic shattered their formation.

Queenie whispers. “Because I spent fifteen years working for men who used crossbow formations on armoured vehicles, and if they can punch through a car door, they can damn well punch through my living room wall.” He positions himself between us and the window. “When they fire, there’ll be a reload window. Fifteen seconds, maybe twenty, depending on the draw weight. Those are the seconds that count.” I’m counting in my head. Harrison said thirty. We’ve already burned ten of them.

She felt a rage of emotional turbulence brewing within her while she struggled to free herself from the impact of the day's mix of events. Slowly, she removed herself from Ben's arms and staggered to her feet--still feeling the impact of alcohol. Ben followed suit hoping to steady her as she made to move away from the sofa. He grabbed her hips from behind and pressed his body against hers.

He'll never reach me in time. He yells and I smile. Whatever he says, it's too late. I dive. The wind slides over my flesh and the burning sensation takes hold of me again. It builds and it feels as if my entire body is eaten by flames. The pain stops my breath. I've almost died of cancer, crossed realms, and been cast aside by a dragon. I can handle pain.
