Chapter 8: School Clubs Mia's eyes widened as she spotted the dessert section. "Look at those cupcakes!" she exclaimed, pointing at the frosted treats topped with rainbow sprinkles. My gaze followed Mia's finger, and i couldn't help but smile at the sight. When it was our turn to be served, i decided on a turkey and cheese sandwich with a side of Caesar salad, while Mia opted for a slice of lasagna accompanied by garlic bread. We both picked up a cupcake, promising to savor it as a reward for surviving our first day in school. I realized that the only other thing capable of keeping Mia quite was food.

I stepped into the hallway once it was almost empty and headed to my locker, trying to look casual even though my heartbeat felt like it was in my throat. I turned the dial — 14, 22, 18 — and the door swung open with a metallic click. And my heart… paused. Because sitting right in the middle of my books was a cupcake. Chocolate base, vanilla frosting, a tiny blue star-shaped sprinkle on top. My favorite. There was a folded note taped to the side. For a moment, I just stared at it. After everything that happened, the cupcake looked so out of place — too sweet, too hopeful — like a tiny apology from the universe.

“Perhaps when you finally wake up and you are feeling better, we can have a picnic on the grass. Nina can make her famous cupcakes.” I swallow hard. My mouth feels completely dry. “They are unbelievably good, Betty. The cupcakes just melt right in your mouth. The taste is incredible.” I reach out. My fingers hover over her cold, limp hand.
