My blood turned cold. From the shadows ahead emerged a large, powerful cougar, muscles rippling beneath tawny fur. Its golden eyes locked onto mine. I raised my hand instantly to summon my powers for defense. But there was nothing. I tried again, summoning the familiar silver glow. A sharp, burning pain flared at my wrist.I gasped, clutching the skin hard as if it'll make the pain stop. The black mark seated on my wrist, the Mark of the Cursed, seared like heated iron. The pain disrupted my focus, scattering my magic before it could form.

Chelsea noted. "It's because of the curse," Bryan replied. "What is this curse called?" Chelsea asked. Bryan explained it was the Midnight Curse, which kills the afflicted and their relatives within an hour if not treated. And if the curse is intense, even stabilization won't help. I sat on the ground, pained, feeling my heart slow and my senses dull. I couldn't make sense of what was happening around me. Chelsea's worried voice reached me; she was giving instructions to Belle and Bryan. I fought the pain, trying to draw the curse into myself so it wouldn't harm Flora or pass to Ivan.
