Lyra's POV During the chaos, I could hear people murmured, but then a very loud growl came from beside me. It was so loud and scary that it made everyone stop talking. It felt like the ground was shaking. A chill ran down my spine and fear gripped me like cold and I could say my heart almost stopped beating. Then, the Lycan king jumped towards my father. "You tried to trick me, Your King!" He exclaimed, his voice loud and angry. He took slow steps to the Alpha, his eyes fixed on him. The Alpha stumbled and fell, which made the Lycan king miss his target. Instead, his claws scratched my father's chest.

My heart impossibly shattered even more, making me stagger back as a stray tear rolled down my shocked cheeks. He hummed and waved his hands, immediately dismissing me while knowing very well that I wasn't okay with the arrangement but since when did Sullivan ever care about my opinion? I quietly returned to my room, all the while recalling every rumor I had ever heard about the Lycan king. His name was believed to be Hunter Tiberius Williams and he was cruelty in human form.

“Let me introduce you to King Alaric Anjou the Third. The King of all humans, werewolves, and magical creatures alike.” I nodded slowly, tracing the lines of the drawing. He looked so much like Lucien it made my skin crawl. “So he’s of French stock, too?” I asked, trying to keep my voice casual while admiring the picture. “Is that all you have to say?” Vivienne asked, her tone dripping with disappointment. “What did you want me to say?” I shot back. “I don't know—show that you're impressed! Both guards fell silent as several males, dressed in all black, came out of the palace, each carrying large, heavy-looking bags. Bags that smelled of wolf’s blood. A wave of nausea rolled through me. The stories about the Lycan King weren’t just rumors – he really was a murderous lunatic. I wanted to curl up in a ball and cry. I wanted to run back to the car and beg the driver to take me back home to my family and my husband. Even Ash was spooked; I felt her tail curl up between her legs. I wish we’d never stepped into that room! I wailed to her.

Finn and Kael staggered but didn’t fall. I clawed at the hand in my hair. Black spots danced in my vision. Then Kael shifted. Mid-stride, he became the towering Lycan again. He roared and charged, slamming shoulder-first into the barrier. It cracked, then shattered around him. Lycans were immune to lesser magics. He leapt as his claws aimed for the Trinax’s head. The creature snarled, stretched out its free arm, and caught Kael by the throat. Massive fingers closed like a vice.

LAYLA My wrist throbbed where they had bound them behind my back, but the pain was nothing compared to the icy fear crawling up my spine.
