I let out a long, shaky laugh, a tear finally breaking free from my lower lid and tracking down through the faint layer of powder on my cheek. I looked toward the high, grimy windows of the old textile mill, looking past the bright theatrical spotlights toward the dark, fog-shrouded alleyways where I knew a single utility van was parked in the shadows.
"Peter," I whispered into the microphone mesh, my voice trembling with an intensity that made the bone-conduction unit vibrate against my skull. "We did it. The line is clear."
