I had not realized they had enough time to bond. Standing up Miranda looks at me, “He saved my life,” she says to both Rick and me. Rick looks surprised. “They had a gun focused on my heart. Daniel leapt in front of me taking the bullet intended for me. If he had not done that, I would not have made it back,” she says as tears stream down her cheeks. “Baby, come here,” Rick says as she moves into his arms. “I owe him my life,” she murmurs as she wipes her tears from her cheeks.

Jackson muttered. "He's following them to the car, and if we let him, things will fall apart because Salvador will discover our secret," Alex explained, and I agreed. "Daniel should just die, he's such a jerk," Jackson said as he fired the gun. When we began shooting, everyone got out of the car and joined us. We almost killed everyone. Daniel attempted to flee, and so I shot him in his leg and ordered others to get him inside the car.

The next morning, Ryan woke up to five missed calls. All from an unknown number. And one voicemail. He didn’t want to listen. But he did. Jake’s voice. Slow. Cold. You can pretend you’re happy. But I see right through you. You’ll come back eventually. You always do. And when you do… I won’t be as nice. Ryan sat on the edge of Daniel’s bed, gripping his phone so tightly it might break. He didn’t cry. Didn’t scream. But when Daniel walked in and saw his face, he didn’t have to ask.

“Savannah, listen he’s the only one with clearance high enough to access the chamber. The system recognizes Sterling DNA. Mine won’t open the door.” Savannah’s heart slammed against her ribs. “So what? You expect me to watch him walk into a burning core and hope he comes out alive?” Jackson took her hands. “I’m not dying.” “You can’t promise that!” “I can promise I’m coming back.” “You don’t know that!” “Yes.” His voice softened but didn’t lose its edge. “I do.” “Jackson ” He touched her cheek, thumb brushing away the tear she didn’t realize had escaped. “Savannah.
