Only twice have we gotten personal: one being my shit-ass-drunk confession about my sister-in-law, the other was when Danny broke up with Dick-face. I’ve only ever seen Danny with one guy and that was last summer. He was a dick-face—professional-shirted dick-face with long sleeves and a tie even in the heat. Dressing down for him was taking off his suit jacket and leaving it in his car. The car was another problem, a sissy-assed Prius. I didn’t like him. Liked him even less when I found out he was a defense attorney. Not that Danny told me this. I saw his ad on television in the middle of a baseball game, with his big white teeth offering to help you with your DUI or personal injury case. Ye

He continued, “Come inside.” As we followed Danny inside, I whispered to Ed, “Why did you say that?” he replied me by showing me his signature smirk. Moron! “About yesterday, your Grandma, Lilly, wanted to talk to me so I’m sorry I didn’t come when you asked me too,” he apologized, to me. He was supposed to say ‘sorry’ to Danny, not me. Why does he dislike Danny so much? He doesn’t even know him. And after the staring competition at the door, both of them were clearly annoyed by each other.

It seems the kid had learned some caution, at least. “Boss?” Danny’s voice was young, and uncertain. “You wanted to see me?” I turned slowly, letting him sweat for a moment. He was twenty, maybe twenty-one. Scrawny. And very nervous. This was the kid who’d let Rylan escape a week ago. “Come here,” I said. Danny approached like he was walking to the gallows. His hands were shaking. I let the silence stretch, watching him squirm. Then I smiled. “Good work.”

I rolled my eyes and smiled. “Remember when I asked you for your opinion? Me neither” I said, as I smiled sweetly at him and walked off to the other side of the room. All the guys started to roll on the ground laughing. I have to say they sounded worse than a hyena. “I hear that there is a new app called sense of humor. D******d it bitch!” Danny snapped. I rolled my eyes. “You know Danny; acting like a dick would not make yours any bigger.” I pointed out.

I checked my email as I drank my water and looked at the list Jack had sent me. Roger Goodman Neil Black Ashley Grant Kade Kominski Charles Huxman I knew four of them. Everybody knew me as Blake Cannon. It was my most active persona. Jack had been awesome, he had sent pictures and last known details of the five hitmen and the number of declines on my contract. Sixty-eight people had declined to kill me. I had mastered the art of distrust at a very young age even though I knew a lot of people in the same line of work, I still kept to myself. Jericho was an enigma to most.

“Danny, are you going to stand and watch as someone pushes Junior? Are you still a man?” Big-bodied Danny sported an elite look. He frowned and pulled a blank face at Kaze and Winnie before uttering arrogantly, “Before I flip out, your child better apologize to my son and compensate one million prys for medical bills.”

Danny, however, finds me right away. "Did you see those touchdowns tonight, baby?" He gloats, ducking down to place kisses on my collarbone. I want to get mad and tell him that of course I did, I was a cheerleader, it was my job to watch the game and cheer the team on. Duh. But I don't do that. I don't push him away either. The sting of Nate's rejection still pinches at my skin and I have to admit that Danny's lips are soothing it.

Emma bit her lip tightly; the disgust she felt made her truly want to vomit immediately. Damien frowned slightly and ordered coldly, "Open your mouth." Emma didn't dare look at him. The slap still terrified her, but she still refused to open her mouth. She naively thought that if she just resisted, kept resisting, he would get bored and stop this vile game. Seeing Emma's stubbornness, Damien delivered another slap to the other side of her face. Both sides of her face were red and burning, and the tears flowing down intensified the pain. "Open your mouth," Damien commanded again. After this slap, he offered her no further comfort.

I questioned curiously. Danny scrunched his eyes shut tightly, a look of excruciating pain on his face. I knew him well enough now to know that was his thinking face. This went on for a while longer, until his eyes lit up and he clapped his hands together as if a 'eureka!' moment had just occured, inside his head. "I guess, I like sport-based games like FIFA. God, I love football." He said with a dreamy sigh as if he was talking about the love of his life.
