“Okay. Story about a coat.” Lyra sat on the edge of the bed and reached for one of the books on the shelf. Her hand hovered over a battered copy of *Little Red Riding Hood*—then veered away. There are no big bad wolves tonight. She picked a different one instead. Something about a small dragon who refused to learn how to roar properly and became a doctor instead. she said, after I had complained that I was being gift-wrapped. The bra was open cup with bows which just about spared my blushes. Not for long, I suspected, if those twins were let loose. Over that I was to wear a Little Red Riding Hood costume, complete with flared skirt and petticoat, black corset and white chemise beneath a concealing trademark cloak. My lips were painted red and I was permitted a touch of mascara but that was all. Patting my double plaits nervously, I rode up in the elevator with the Omega, whose parting advice was to “submit and enjoy”.

I nod. He unties her, and she runs — shoving me out of the way without hesitation — dropping to her knees beside Red. “Reddy, it’s me. Goldilocks. Look at me, baby. Please. Look at me.” Tears stream freely down her cheeks. She grabs Red and holds her tightly. She’s shaking. Begging. “No, no, not this again. Not again. Please, Red. Please come back to me…” For a long moment there is nothing.

I know this is all a masquerade orchestrated by Chris. How much is he paying you, little girl? If you’re good and walk out of here without making too much noise, I’ll double it! Therefore, if you don’t heed our advice, you wouldn’t even know how you died in his hands.” Nora said seriously. The table went silent for the while and three girls looked at Nora, not believing that she came up with such a ridiculous reason.

I could already imagine the way his eyes would glow yellow as they met mine from across the bar. His face fell slightly, and I felt my heart sink before he even spoke. “Audrey, you know I can’t. It’s too risky.” I sat up fully, pulling the blanket around my bare chest. “But it’s Halloween. Everyone will be in costume. No one would even know it’s you. We could just meet up for a few minutes…”
