For once, I held his gaze, my fingers tightening around his forearm.
His stare met mine, unflinching and charged—a flicker of something unfamiliar. Then, softening, he smiled and brushed a loose strand of hair from my face, his touch lingering just long enough to unsteady me.
“Listen,” he said, voice low but firm. “You can’t afford to mess this up. Your mum warned you about your… gifts, didn’t she? Stay sharp. Too much noise in your head, and you’ll lose focus.”
Sod this, I thought bitterly, chewing my lip. Every bloody day, another cretin thinking they’ve a right to leer. Why’d I have to be born a Beta?
