Its glow was unnaturally bright, too close, casting shadows that stretched and writhed. And then, as they watched, darkness bled across its surface.

She willed her mind to go forward and immediately her vision slid along the length of the coil, gaining speed as it went. She moved so quickly along the glowing coil that everything around her flew by in flashes and streaks of color. The flowing colors came to an abrupt halt as she reached the end of the coil. The sky was a deep navy blue as if the sun had not yet risen above the horizon. Cole stood on a ladder at the roof of his house. Several tools were scattered across the roof and he held a hammer in his left hand while he sucked on his right thumb with his eyes closed and his face contorted in pain.
