Alaric leaned back slowly, pressing two fingers against the bridge of his nose as a familiar ache bloomed behind his eyes. Every time he thought he was getting closer to the truth, another contradiction appeared and yanked the ground out from under him. The weight of it pressed heavier on his shoulders.
“So now we have two stories,” he said quietly. “One says five. The other says six.”
“And only one of them can be telling the truth.”
Alaric lowered his hand. “No.” His voice was calm, but something darker flickered beneath it. “What if neither one is?”
