For the first time, I did not feel the amazement that I usually feel every time I see the dawn of the day. Instead, I was still baffled by the man with golden eyes and tail.

*** Hazel’s pov The next morning, I woke up feeling determined. I had been doing everything in my power to adjust to life in the Red Moon pack and no matter what Evelyn threw at me, I wasn’t going to give up. The soft light of morning sun shone through my window as I stretched and got ready for the day. I quickly washed then dressed, deciding to go down to the healing tent. The healers were always nice and learning new things from Mara made me feel like I was actually helping with something. But as soon as I stepped outside the packhouse, that’s when things started getting weird.

Wiping my face with my hands, I step away from her and whimper, "Thank you." Aurora's eyes are fixed on Dawn, and she asks, "Shall we start now?" They encircle me and start chanting. Unmoved, I stand still as a stone dazing into space. While they cast their spell, I chant a protective shield against them. When they're done, I collapse to the floor. Several help me to the couch in Dawn's office. I'm out for hours combatting their attacks. My eyes open, and I'm at home in bed. I sit up, and Dawn is meditating by my door. She opens her eyes and smiles. As I'm stretching, she asks, "Are you hungry?"

“I want my daughter at home. She will be cared for there. Once my granddaughter is found, she too will be returned to my family. Mia will no longer be permitted to enter these grounds and I shall be ordering your son to reject my granddaughter. She deserves better than this.” His words shocked the others but nobody dared to disobey him. “Yes, of course.” Antonio nodded glad that he was understood. The doctor suddenly appeared and bowed to them, before explaining Dawn’s situation. “She is extremely weak, her wolf has retreated and until she wakes up, we will be unsure of how long it will take her to recover. I quickly realized she was mid-shift. “INVITE ME IN,” I heard again, as I surrendered to Coral. “Don’t do it Daisy,” Ben shouted, helping her up. Growling and swatting, Coral jumped off the bed as Dawn began to push through mom, and it didn’t look like she stood a chance either. Ben moved away from her, barely missing her claws as her paw swatted at him. Seconds later Dawn was fully shifted and she howled. “No,” Sunny shouted, as Coral flicked her head up. Sunny froze on the doorway, she looked paralyzed.

Diane's POV I ran before the phones could steady. That's the only mercy of a shaking hand holding a camera in a gray dawn — the pictures come out as blurs, smears of fog and motion, a shape that could be anything. A large mirror appeared in front of me. I was pinned in a hidden corner behind it. The sounds started quickly. Two figures tumbled onto the bed. Serena tore open Ethan's white shirt. "Come on, let me see if you still have those abs. I've been dying for this." Ethan glanced at me through the mirror, then turned back to Serena. "You know I'm not Caleb. You never give me much time. Two days from now you won't be mine anymore. So tonight, can we pretend this is our wedding night?"

She rested her hand gently on my back, and her voice was soft. “Does it still hurt?” It was such a simple question, yet it undid me completely.
