A Monday already has the emotional texture of damp socks and unpaid bills, so adding zombies feels less like a cosmic betrayal and more like management escalating a complaint. People shuffled awkwardly, whispering under their breath, trying to decide which one looked least likely to kill them. Then Hoodie guy stepped forward first. Of course he did. He took the path with the shortest amount of trees and wild grass so that the car wouldn’t accidentally bump into something. Luckily, they hit the road soon and he was relieved though he didn’t give any outward sign of the same. It was probably an effect of too much novel reading, my mind was cooking up all sorts of hypothetical situations. Were those men vampires? Or were they zombies? Will they be getting up? Will I now face a group of undeads on my way back home. I heard the lad heave a deep, deep sigh. As if he was very disappointed in me. Surprisingly enough, I was reborn to the timeframe where there were six hours left before the zombie outbreak began. Memories of my past life were replayed in my mind like a movie reel. It was as if I could still smell the rotten and bloodied stench wafting from the zombies. With a trembling hand, I felt my neck. Although it felt smooth and flawless, I could still feel phantom pain flaring from it. The moment my phone's screen lit up, I turned my attention to it immediately. It was currently October 2nd, 2025, also known as the day the zombie virus was leaked.

She doubted a zombie would be able to locate her there, even an advanced zombie. One of the things about zombies that stayed with them, no matter how much of their thinking and motor skills returned was the fact that they had poor night vision, depth perception, and were color blind. Those factors went in her favor since the opening to the root cellar was beneath a very realistic looking shrub that was attached to the trap door. Its coloring varied from those it was amongst only by the slightest degree and, unless you ran your hand over it, you’d never guess it wasn’t real. Combine that to the fact that it was nighttime, and she felt safe in her selection of hiding places.
