She stood back-to-back with Julian. Her doctor’s clothes were ripped. Her hair was tangled and wild. A deep ache settled in her chest. Every time one of those monsters touched the page, Maya felt her memories tremble. These things weren’t just monsters. They were bugs—errors in the computer system, hungry for the story. “The Author said the secret is in the title!” Maya shouted, as the scratching of a thousand tiny legs got louder. “The title of the 100th chapter!” “How do you find a title for a chapter that hasn’t been written yet?” Julian asked. He kicked a shadow-creature away. His face twisted in pain when hot black ink scorched his spirit-leg.

Elixir’s POV I had seen monsters. I had seen gods. But nothing prepared me for the sight of myself—many times over. They stepped from the shadows in silence. Each version of me had something different in their eyes. One wore a crown of bone. One carried a staff wreathed in smoke. One had no mouth—her silence screaming louder than any voice. They circled the temple’s entrance like sentinels of a truth I hadn’t asked to face. Lucian’s growl was low, protective, and rising. “What is this?”
