A Night In Daddy's Bed
I found myself wondering how long he had stood outside, working up the courage to come in.
“Where have you been, Benjamin?”
“I got scared.”
“Why?”
He shrugged. “I had to get away.”
“Where did you go?”
“Nowhere.”
I let the contradiction pass. Benjamin was full of them. His hands fidgeted, searching for refuge, eventually disappearing into his pockets.
“Do you want to take off your coat?”
“It’s OK.”
“Well, at least sit down.”
I gestured toward my office. He moved inside, pausing in front of the bookshelves, scanning the titles. Most of them were texts on psychology and animal behaviour. After a moment, he reached out and tapped a spine.
