Whispers Through the Wall
She'd never promised anything.
But still.
Still, it hurt.
When he descended downstairs, her apartment was black. No music. No lights. No laughter.
He slept, thinking that perhaps she'd gone away again.
But at 2:17 AM, someone had knocked on his door.
One soft knock.
And then nothing.
He slowly sat up, his heart racing.
Then a voice, whispered almost.
"Ethan… please."
Her desperation in her tone pierced him.
He rose, padded across the floor barefoot, and opened the door.
