A real smile, open and unguarded. I stared at it. "When..." "The day after the wedding." I turned to the next page. She was laughing in this one. Actually laughing, head slightly back, the expression of someone who had heard something and had not managed to contain the response to it. Something hot and violent twisted in my chest. He had made her laugh. The Decaulion, who everyone in every territory spoke about like a weather warning, had made her laugh. She barely smiled in any photograph I had of her across two years of careful documentation. She looked nothing like those photographs in this one.

I didn't want lies; I had a lot to deal with. Mom looked at me and then at Dad before she burst into laughter. I was confused until Dad joined her, and they laughed to their fullest until they struggled to breathe, as they stopped and caught their breaths. "I'm sorry, what's funny?” I questioned.
