Hakeem was the only one of us that managed to sound calm and collected.
The Whisperer’s attention was a physical thing that one could feel wash over them. It brought with it temptation and curiosity, a growing need to put a face to that voice and name.
“Hakeem Wilson, how I hoped Lilac would bring you along. Did you know that truth-seeking is a rare ability? Actually, don’t answer that. Apart from being a ‘human lie detector,’ you have no clue what your ability is capable of. It’s a shame, really.”
He was baiting him. I knew that, and so did Hakeem, yet he took to it just as the Whisperer intended.
