Ignoring it, we continued our search and eventually stumbled upon a book titled "The Reaper of Sanity." "Here it is!" I exclaimed as I retrieved the book. "Oh, no!" Dominic exclaimed, clutching his head. "I need to park the car. You should start reading, I'll be right back." With that, he left me at the table with the book in my hand.

It was a horror story. Half a page of this book that she glanced at last year made her have sleepless nights. This book served the purpose of building the heart's strength and courage. A wizard or witch from time to time would go on missions. None of them was a stroll in the park. If one was not valiant, he/she wouldn't be able to do so. But she was still a babe. How can he read this sort of book to her? Is he truly her brother?

Mainly consisting of gore and graphic details of killing he had dropped it, never even getting past the first chapter. If he recalled the very first sentence described a horrific scene of a man who had cut his wife's throat. Many would have stopped reading at the very first scene yet for some reason this woman was so intrigued with the book that she had nearly forgotten she was conversing with me. How interesting. The more I learn about her the more she seems to shock me.

And somewhere in the shadows of my quiet apartment, something very old… stirred. I finally summoned courage to slam the book shut with a sharp snap that echoed through my quiet apartment. My heart was racing, skin flushed hot despite the cool rain still pattering against the windows. That invisible presence lingered in the air like heavy incense — thick, masculine, and far too interested. I couldn’t explain it, but every instinct screamed that opening that book any further tonight would be dangerous. “No,” I whispered to the empty room. “Not tonight.”

There, on the cover, was the same image she’d seen on her grandma’s leather box, and in the Voynich manuscript. Only this time the strange face on the front of the book wasn’t so surreal—it was as clear as day. It was an image of Scarlet’s face.

She said jokingly as she threw him the key. He unlocked the restraint and stayed still, unable to move because he knew it would be pointless to try and attack her, much less try to run away. The others were based on psychology, anatomy and various poisons. He felt more anxious than before.

And then— The overhead lights flickered. A sharp, electric buzz filled the room. I turned— And caught a glimpse of the mirror on the far wall. For a moment, my reflection stared back. Wide eyes. A hollow face. Then— It smiled. Not my smile. His. A whisper slithered through the air. "You thought you won?" The lights went out. And the nightmare— Began again.
