The hospital felt like a labyrinth, but I eventually found the right room. The doctor on duty looked weary, probably from the countless cases like Violet's they had seen. "She's stable now, but it was close," they explained. "We're detoxifying her system, but she's going to need a lot of support. She can't live alone after she's discharged. Someone will need to take care of her, make sure she doesn't relapse." Their eyes met mine, and I knew what they were implying. That someone would have to be me.
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. "I'll do it. Whatever it takes."
