I’d been expecting this call, and it’s kept me on edge all morning.
“Zach, you can’t do this,” the doctor protested, a look of disapproval staining his features. “We have to run this scan,” he continued, “I have other patients to attend to.”
But I wasn’t hearing any of what he was saying, because I’d slid up the answer icon and slammed the phone against my ear. “What’s the update?” I asked at once, not pausing to catch my breath.
“Boss…” Dante’s voice filtered through the phone speaker, hesitant and deeply laced with fear.
