“You’ve said that so many times I’m starting to wonder—are you trying to convince me, or yourself?”
Susan shot her a sharp glare but didn’t respond. Caroline, unbothered, burst into laughter.
“What?” she teased. “Out of all the things your doctor told you to avoid, did ‘having a sense of humor’ make the list too? Did he say you couldn't take a joke too?”
“This isn’t a joke,” Susan muttered, sinking onto the bed beside her friend. She rubbed her temples in frustration. “I don’t need him. I’ve been fine without him for this long, and I’ll keep being fine. He’s bad news, Caroline.”
