I dragged my gaze around, confused by their reaction. Wait, he did say this was the ‘Dragon Keep’. The memory of when I came across a book about Dragons rushed into my mind. “...dragons are egoistic creatures who think they're better than everyone. They hung our kind for sport. They're monsters, Eloise…” Mae had told me that day.

"Ninety-five. Too short. One hundred fifteen. Too long. One hundred five. Getting warmer. One hundred nine. Colder. Okay, here it is. A Girl and a Dog. One hundred pages." Jane walked up and down the shelves, half looking at the titles, half looking at nothing. "Here's another one," Emily called over to her in a loud whisper. "A horse of Her Own. Exactly one hundred pages. Do want it? Or do you want A Girl and a Dog instead?" Jane shook her head. "It sounds like a children's book." "It looks like a short book. Okay, here's another one. One hundred and three pages. There's a dog on the cover too."

“Hey—hey, look at me, cousin. Breathe. Focus on my voice. What did you see? Tell me everything.” I force air into my lungs, my voice trembling, every word hard-won. “The pack… it was empty. Everyone was gone. The streets...dead. Everyone was asleep. Zeke was…” I swallow hard, the image of his black eyes searing my mind. “His seal was broken. And there was a man...no, not a man. A demon. He had grey skin, smoke everywhere around him...he was terrifying. He told me I’d been sleeping too long.”

I wandered to the library—books were safer than people. Or so I thought. The moment I stepped inside, I saw him again. Damien. Sitting by the window with a book he probably wasn’t reading, his long legs stretched out, blazer slung casually over the chair. A predator at rest. His eyes flicked up. Found me. Stayed. I froze. Then, with deliberate arrogance, he crooked a finger. “You. Come here.” My jaw tightened. “I’m not a dog.” For a second, silence. Then the corners of his lips curled into that wicked smirk again. “Good. Dogs obey. I prefer things that bite.”

"Please, I want the book. One day I will understand." Brandt smiled and replied with humor, "If you ever make sense of it, let me know. You can then argue with my father on the merits of Christianity. He believes in the Goddess and loves nothing better than a good philosophical debate." He turned and picked up another book. It had a picture of a wolf with a snowy mountain background. "This is Jack London's Call of the Wild and it's the one we'll read first. Let's finish the cake and then get ready for our evening company."

He reached into his drawer and produced a book for them. "You will read this *The First Mate* " He told them and they looked at him in surprise. " This is a 1000 paged book, telling the tale of the first humans to be mated to a wolf. Summarize it for me, and practice everything you see in there. " He said. " I must see changes, or else I'll cut down your allowance to a quarter." He threatened. He hoped this works, to keep them at bay for the mean time.

“It’s a dog. Big. Black. Mean. A Doberman. It wants to eat me.” I screamed, trying to climb higher on his chest. “Where are you trying to climb? Do I look like a tree?” His voice was sharp as he tightened his grip to keep balance, pulling a small moan from me. “He’s calm. Friendly. He has never attacked anyone… unless I give him the order,” he said reassuringly. I studied his face from this dangerous closeness. His breath. His scent. He was distracting enough to make me forget the dog. “I bet he just wanted to play with you.”

He bared his teeth and growled. “Shoo,” she shouted, but the animal didn’t stop. When he reached them he slowed. His growl moved deep in his chest as he padded around them, his intent gaze never leaving their faces. The hackles on his back rose. Lizzy and James cried, burying their faces further into her dress. The dog continued to taunt. Then the animal lunged. Mercedes threw the rock, hitting the beast between the eyes. The dog gave a sharp yelp before tucking his tail and running away.
