Elena's POV In the first year of our marriage, Lorenzo Moretti publicly announced that I wouldn't be the Donna of the Moretti family. Instead, he made me do the work of a maid for a dollar per task. I worked myself to the bone, injuring my back. On rainy days, I would shake from the pain. In the second year of our marriage, the Moretti family's casino in Lavergo opened, and I was called in to work as a dealer. I was paid five dollars a night.

His whole body felt like it was melting. Suddenly he saw the shadow of another person approach. All he saw was the shadow, but he was sure that was the man running the operation. He could see the tiny laser dot aimed at the glittering window. All heat was forgotten. Larry took a deep breath. “Hold fire,” Dominion repeated. “Okay, go for the kill.” There was minimal sound, or at least not to him, until the bullet smashed through the glass. The entire window shattered, sending sparkles of light in every direction.

Flavius wades through the crowd of dragons until he comes upon a SpitFire much smaller than the rest. Her scales are a brilliant lilac compared to the deep violet of the other SpitFires. She slowly approaches Flavius sniffing his outstretched hand. Flavius uncurls his fingers, reaching for her head. In one swift movement, her jaws snap down on Flavius's hand. He lets out a yelp of surprise but does not try to pull his hand away. Blood drips from the mouth of the small SpitFire. She makes no move to rip Flavius's arm off, which is a good sign.

He looked at me, a dark, reckless smirk touching his lips. "Ready to burn the books, Donna?" I reached into my waistband, my fingers closing around the ceramic blade. "I never liked reading anyway." The first volley of gunfire shredded the silence of the cathedral, and the red light of the emergency flares turned the marble into a river of blood.

I pulled myself up onto the flat surface of the island, and immediately felt my resolve buckle. The sources of light I had seen were bodies. Lifeless charred shapes of men still on fire. I fought back the urge to vomit. I just had to hope that one of them wasn’t Jack. A new burst of fire surged from the sky and I looked at where it was being directed. My heart stopped as I caught sight of the flaxen coloured wolf darting out of the way. It was Danny.

Speeding up, the forest blurred past a dark, shadowy landscape. Then I noticed the door to the car she was in open, and soon a body rolled out of the vehicle, and the last two cars and my car drove over the body. What was going on? Were they going to throw her out? What was going on inside the vehicle? Did she try to fight them? My heart pounded louder, drowning out the roar of the engine. Then I saw her. Mi Cariño, leaping out of the moving car. My heart seemed to stop as I watched her tumble onto the forest floor. She rolled a few times before coming to a stop, her body limp and unmoving. For a split second, time froze, and a cold terror gripped me.

Stripes. Burning across my body like fire. The air itself seemed to change. The wolves hesitated. Just for a second. That was their mistake. I moved. Faster than before. Stronger. Unstoppable. I tore through them. No hesitation now. No strategy. Just dominance. One after another. They fell. Until only one remained. Celdor stepped forward. Finally. I tilted my head slightly, blood dripping from my jaw. “You should have stayed hidden.” He didn’t respond.

He read the line again quietly to himself. 'Yes,' he said. She wrote about what it had felt like the first time someone listened to her with complete attention — how it had felt like drinking water after a long thirst, and how two years later it still felt exactly like that.
