Vincent Pain rips through my side as consciousness returns. Then, with zero concern, Nyra dropped her head back down and made a low sound—something between a growl and a grunt, like a: Hmm! And went right back to sleep. Dolores widened her eyes and grabbed her pants. “See? She even grumbles!” she whispered, tiptoeing through the kitchen as if passing a live bomb. She finally gathered enough courage—more out of desperation than bravery—and followed the cowboy. She kept glancing back to make sure Nyra wasn’t coming after her, which almost caused her to bump into a ceramic pot. God knows where that came from. Dolores froze and stared ahead.

I want Don. I hear soft snores coming from Don. He has fallen asleep. I stare at the man I wanted so badly, the ideal man I always dreamed about and yet was too afraid to admit. Don is too good for me and deserves someone better. After I canceled my engagement with Eddie, I wanted to settle my life down first with Leo. The romance wasn't part of the plan, but with Don entering my life and pushing through the walls, I had a barricade to prevent incoming events that could interrupt my goal. But my walls have a hole; something or someone made that hole. And it happened when Don kissed me at Lake Tahoe.
